The fourth Wokha District Inter-School Sepaktakraw Tournament commenced at the Public Ground, Wokha, on October 15, with Nagaland Sepaktakraw Association president Ruokuo Kire attending the inaugural programme as the special guest.

Addressing the players, Kire encouraged them to uphold sportsmanship, discipline and integrity, emphasising that both victory and defeat are part of an athlete’s journey. He urged participants to learn from their mistakes, remain humble in success and continue striving for excellence.

He appreciated the Wokha District Sepaktakraw Association (WDSA-S) for organising the tournament annually, describing schools as an important foundation for nurturing sporting talent. He also called on teachers, coaches and parents to encourage students to take part in sports and contribute to the development of a strong sporting culture.

Kire further assured that the Nagaland Sepaktakraw Association would continue promoting the sport across districts and schools where interest exists. He expressed confidence that the tournament would inspire more young boys and girls to take up sepaktakraw, while noting that Nagaland has established itself among the leading states in the discipline, with several players representing the state at the national level.

In his welcome address, WDSA president Dr. T. Thungchibemo Lotha highlighted the association’s progress since its formation on October 20, 2021. He informed that Wokha district has produced two national-level players and one state-level player.

Lotha also stated that 12 schools are currently registered under the association and expressed hope that more institutions would join the initiative to promote sepaktakraw in the district.

The inaugural programme was chaired by Surojit Mitra, principal of Libemo Memorial School, Wokha, who also offered the invocation prayer. The tournament was formally declared open with a ceremonial kick-off by Kire.

The two-day championship will conclude on October 16, with Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, K. Mhathung Tsanglao, NCS, attending the closing programme as the guest of honour.
