A reported bid to garner public support for allowing toll collection at entry gates has fallen flat. There was a meeting on November 4 for deliberating an appeal reportedly from the municipal body to Dimapur-based civil society organisations (CSO), seeking support in the former’s push for levying entry tolls on commercial vehicles at the New Field and Dillai inter-state check-posts.
The meeting was called by the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD). As per the meeting circular issued by the NCD, on October 26, the November 4 “joint consultative meeting” of affiliates was being called in response to an appeal made by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) during a previous joint meeting on September 21. The circular said that the DMC “made a fervent appeal… to Tribe Hohos and Dimapur based CSOs to support DMC's proposal to impose Entry Fee for Commercial Vehicles at New Field Check Gate and the Delai Gate.”
The proposal fell through, finding no takers at the November 4 meeting. Sources citing people privy to the meeting said that there was consensus against the prospect of lobbying the state government to allow resumption of entry fees by urban local bodies.
Earlier, in February 2026, the Municipal Affairs Department had directed all ULBs to cease toll collection, including vehicle entry fees. There is already a standing directive from the state government, dating to May 2022, prohibiting levying of non-statutory fees at check-posts on goods covered under the Goods and Services Tax.
