Kohima, September 30 (MExN): A four day long 60th session of Reguri village Yishi festival under the theme “"Anchoring our Culture" commenced today at Reguri under Meluri district.
Yishi is a millet and corn harvest festival of the Pochury tribe.
Gracing the opening ceremony as the special guest, Tafi Snock Phoji, State Executive Member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), congratulated the people of Reguri on reaching the 60th milestone of Yishi celebration.
She was accompanied by Nini Cheng, Tsetsiitho Nyuthe and Yigo Pichhurii of BJP Nagaland.
She commended the Pochury community for preserving and promoting their rich cultural identity, and encouraged the younger generation to take pride in their heritage while striving for progress and development.
"Let this festival be significant of forgiveness and progress,” she said.
Stating that Reguri is blessed with abundance of flora and fauna, Phoji said that the future generation should preserve the rich God gifted natural resources like the older generations have done it.
Yishi festival is also celebrated to pay homage to the departed souls.
The festival is marked by vibrant cultural performances, including folk songs, indigenous games and modern sports that symbolize unity, thanksgiving, and the spirit of community.
Villagers and visitors from far and near came together in a grand feast, reflecting the harmony and hospitality of the Pochury people.
Reguri village is one of the remotest villages of the state, bordering Myanmar International Border Point-130.
Since the inception of the village, this is the first time a lady has been invited to grace the traditional festival celebration as the chief guest, making it a historical moment for Reguri village.
Earlier, the opening ceremony was chaired by Daniel Trakgha while R.Josan, Pastor RUBC invoked God’s grace.
Brief note of Yishi was narrated by Sachu Thuzu (VCC) while vote of thanks was proposed by Yitsomu (VP-RVY) and benediction by P. Dunyu, Pastor UPC.
The festival, which will continue till October 3, will be marked by Telo Tete, Archery, Bamboo Climbing, Tug of War, Folk tune, football, volleyball and basketball.
