DIMAPUR, AUGUST 20 (MExN): Nagaland Agriculture Advisor and MLA Mhathung Yanthan called for stronger agricultural research, education and extension institutions in the State and the wider North Eastern Region at the 97th Annual General Meeting of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Society in New Delhi on August 18.

The meeting was chaired by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and attended by Union and state ministers from the agriculture and allied sectors. Speaking at the meeting, Yanthan sought the establishment of a national or regional institute dedicated to hill agriculture and climate-resilient farming, preferably in Nagaland.

He also called for the establishment of colleges specialising in horticulture, fisheries, natural farming and food technology in Nagaland under the Central Agricultural University (CAU) framework. Yanthan further urged ICAR to strengthen recruitment and infrastructure at all 11 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in Nagaland, including the ICAR Nagaland Centre at Medziphema. He also sought expedited establishment of new KVKs in the State's newly created districts.

The Advisor urged ICAR to accord greater institutional priority to Nagaland's farmers and youth, citing the State's agricultural potential and the specific requirements of hill agriculture. He said stronger institutional support for research, education and extension was essential to address the unique challenges of farming in Nagaland and the North East.
