Kohima, March 12 (MExN): The All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has expressed strong concern and opposition to a directive reportedly issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the mandatory recitation of Vande Mataram in educational institutions across Nagaland.
In a statement, the union reminded the State Government that Nagaland is home to diverse communities with distinct cultural, historical and religious identities.
It stated that making the recitation compulsory in colleges and educational institutions would undermine the provisions of Article 371(A), as well as the principles of conscience, democratic values, traditional practices and respect for diversity enshrined in the Constitution of India.
The ANCSU said it believes that educational institutions should remain spaces for learning, mutual respect and inclusivity.
It further stated that policies or directives that fail to take into account the unique socio-cultural context of Nagaland may inadvertently disturb the harmony that has been carefully nurtured in academic institutions in the state.
In view of these concerns, the union appealed to all colleges and educational institutions across Nagaland to refrain from implementing the directive mandating the recitation of Vande Mataram.
The ANCSU also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity and unity of the student community.
