Guwahati, May 2 (MExN): The Ao community in Guwahati celebrated the premier Ao festival, Moatsü, with enthusiasm and cultural vibrancy at Naga Chokka on May 1. The event was organised by the Ao Senso Welfare Telungjem, Guwahati.

Speaking as the guest speaker, K Temjen Jamir, Publisher and Editor of Tir Yimyim, underscored the importance of preserving and applying cultural values in modern society, and strengthening community bonds through festivals like Moatsü.

He recalled that Moatsü was traditionally celebrated for six days in earlier times in recognition of God’s blessings, serving as a period for sharing love and joy among community members. Emphasising the importance of work culture, he said celebrations must be meaningful and rooted in effort. “Without work, celebration of any cultural festival is meaningless,” he added.

Jamir also urged Ao Naga community members living outside Nagaland to contribute positively to the state, encouraging them to become a source of “brain gain” rather than “brain drain”.

In his address, Rev Dr Toshirenba highlighted the significance of the festival and its relevance in contemporary society. He stressed the need for the younger generation to remain connected to their roots, not merely through traditional attire but by embracing cultural values, ethics, and proper conduct.

A key attraction of the celebration was a farmers’ market showcasing local produce and traditional items, promoting community-based livelihoods and sustainability. The market also served as a platform for fundraising for the Senso.

The cultural segment featured a traditional folk dance performance by Ao Kaketshir Telungjem, Guwahati. Children also participated in a traditional fashion show, presenting Ao attire and adding vibrancy to the event.

Other attractions included curated T-shirts and caps displayed and sold as part of the cultural showcase. The programme witnessed active participation from members of the Ao community and other invitees, making it a memorable and meaningful celebration.

Earlier, ASWTG president Mangronger Jamir delivered the welcome address, while Rev Puna pronounced the Moatsü invocation.
