IMPHAL | October 6
The ‘Joint Action Committee against the Brutal Murder of Athuan Abonmai’ on Wednesday announced suspension of all forms of agitations related with the murder of the former Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN) president.
The development came after a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed with the state government after a talk at the Chief Minister’s level on October 6.
As per the agreement, the State government will conduct an inquiry into the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Athuan Abonmai to “fix responsibility.” The inquiry will be conducted by an officer, not below the rank of an additional chief secretary to the government of Manipur. As far as possible, the inquiry will be completed within three months. The inquiry will be independent of the investigation to be conducted by the NIA, and the findings thereof may be submitted to the NIA.
It was agreed that the eldest son of late Athuan Abonmai will be appointed to the post of sub-inspector of police in the Manipur Police department.
The government further agreed to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the next-of-kin of late Abonmai. It was also agreed that a suitable site will be identified by the deputy commissioner concerned in consultation with the JAC for establishing a graveyard of late Abonmai, and where a memorial could be set up in his memory.
The JAC will suspend all forms of agitation and extend cooperation to the police and all investigating agencies to facilitate the early completion of the investigation. The JAC will take steps for receiving custody of the dead body of the former Zeliangrong Baudi president for conducting a funeral, with assistance from the DC concerned.
