Chümoukedima, August 20 (MExN): The College of Nursing, Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR), in collaboration with the Department of Education, Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), conducted a one-day workshop on Basic First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) on August 20, equipping students with practical skills to respond to medical emergencies.
The workshop covered first aid response, heatstroke, fainting (syncope), bleeding, nosebleeds (epistaxis), breathing techniques and BLS, combining interactive sessions with demonstrations and hands-on training.
Prof L Lidziisa Mao led the first session, explaining first aid as immediate and temporary care provided before professional medical assistance is available.
She emphasised its key objectives of preserving life, preventing deterioration, promoting recovery, protecting the victim and providing psychological support.

Prof Lidziisa also stressed the importance of remaining calm, assessing a victim for major injuries and bleeding, ensuring immediate safety and controlling bleeding promptly during emergencies.
The subsequent sessions focused on specific emergency-response skills. B.Sc Nursing intern Kechegi Khing demonstrated methods for managing bleeding and epistaxis, while also explaining appropriate first-aid measures for syncope.
BSc Nursing, 8th Semester intern Imnasangla Longkumer conducted a session on breathing techniques and BLS.
She introduced diaphragmatic and box breathing, including the 4-4-4-4 technique, and discussed breathing strategies and precautions when assisting someone experiencing a panic attack.
On BLS, Longkumer explained the steps preceding CPR and highlighted early recognition of cardiac arrest, seeking emergency assistance, effective CPR, appropriate chest-compression rate and depth, complete chest recoil and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) when available.

She stressed that BLS is not limited to healthcare professionals and that members of the public can also learn and perform basic life-saving measures, noting that calm and timely response by a bystander can potentially save a life.
The theoretical sessions were followed by practical CPR demonstrations by nursing interns, after which Patkai students practised chest compressions under the guidance of the nursing team, informed a press release from the college.
The resource team was led by Prof Lidziisa included Akumtoshi L Longkumer and Rashmita Boruah, BSc Nursing Tutors, along with 10 nursing interns.
