Mon, August 20 (MExN): The Commission for Education Diocese of Kohima (CEDOK) extended Rs 8.5 lakh in relief to 103 students whose homes were completely destroyed or severely damaged in natural disasters and accidents in Mon district, while also providing assistance to families who lost members in the July 19 landslide. The relief was mobilised through contributions from Catholic schools across Nagaland following an appeal by Rev Fr Dr Jacob Charalel, Secretary, CEDOK. Students, parents, teachers and school managements contributed to the initiative, which aimed to support affected families irrespective of tribe, race, culture or religious denomination.
According to CEDOK, the team visited affected families on August 19 and prayed with families who lost members in the July 19 landslide. On August 20, relief distribution sessions were held at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School and St John Higher Secondary School, where affected students and families received assistance. Families received Rs 15,000 each, while individual affected students received Rs 9,000, CEDOK stated.
Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak highlighted disaster preparedness and urged residents to remain cautious, noting that the region is prone to natural calamities. He also acknowledged the Catholic Church’s continued response to social needs. Konyak Union Secretary Yongwan Konyak and All Nagaland Private Schools Association (ANPSA), Mon Unit, President L Yajao Konyak also appreciated CEDOK’s relief initiative.
CEDOK acknowledged the support of the Mon district administration, including EAC Imlong Chaba Chang, Konyak Union, ANPSA Mon unit and Konyak Students’ Union, as well as Rev Fr Lawrence Elow, SDB, Principal of Don Bosco School, Mon, and Pangnyei Konyak for facilitating the relief activities. The initiative was described by CEDOK as an expression of solidarity and support for affected families as they rebuild their lives.
