DMC issues new slaughter timing directive, bans sale of uncastrated pigs

DIMAPUR, APRIL 1 (MExN): The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has issued a fresh directive regulating slaughterhouse practices in the city, mandating stricter slaughter timings and a ban on the supply of uncastrated pigs, in a move to enhance public health and meat safety.

According to an order issued by Chief Executive Officer Thungchanbemo Tungoe, butchers and pig suppliers must conduct all animal slaughter between 3:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to allow for ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections by the Veterinary Public Health Cell of the DMC.

“No supplier should supply un-castrated pigs to the butchers. Also, the butchers are directed not to sell measly pork or beef to the public,” the order stated, warning that violators will be penalized under the relevant provisions of the Municipal Act.

The directive also specifies that animals suspected of illness will be quarantined and supervised by the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry.

In cases where animals are injured during transport, emergency slaughter will be permitted on the advice of a veterinarian.
