A major fire broke out at Officer’s Hill Colony, Kohima, on Tuesday, gutting three katcha houses and affecting six families.

According to officials from Fire Station South, Kohima, the fire was reported around 12:11 PM at Officer’s Hill, Sector D.

Firefighters responding to the call said the blaze escalated rapidly due to the combustible nature of the structures, which were primarily made of tin sheets and wood. A fireman further informed that three to four gas cylinders exploded before the fire services arrived.

The affected houses were located approximately 100–200 metres from the main road, posing challenges in firefighting efforts.

However, two fire tenders, around 10 firefighters, and local residents, including youths from the colony, managed to bring the blaze under control within an hour, the Fire station official informed.

While the exact extent of property damage is yet to be assessed, initial estimates suggest losses amounting to Rs 15-20 lakh, as some tenants were not present at the time of the incident.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit.

Residents of the colony stated that the occupants of the affected houses included daily wage earners and students.

Meanwhile, Colony Chairman Khrielakuo Sekhose informed that immediate relief was provided to the victims by the colony council and ward councillor Kevinei Sekhose.
