Youth cautioned on drug harm, digital addiction

Kohima, April 10 (MExN): The sensitisation programme organised under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was organised by Kohima District Narcotics Coordination Committee (NCORD) in collaboration with TM Higher Secondary School, Kohima on April 10.

As per the DIPR report, addressing students and staff, Moasunep K Jingru, EAC (Development) and Nodal Officer for the Nasha Mukt Bharat initiative in Kohima district emphasised that substance abuse disrupts the essential harmony of physical health, mental clarity and spiritual grounding, key elements needed to succeed in life.

“Drugs don’t just harm the body,” he said, “They cloud the mind and weaken our moral compass.” He encouraged young people to actively build a life rooted in discipline, positive choices, and strong values.

He also cautioned against modern forms of addiction beyond drugs, such as excessive screen time and social media use, urging students to remain vigilant and self-aware. “Learn to limit what drains you. Feed your mind with knowledge, not noise,” he advised.

A session was taken up by Capt Dr M Vikas Kumar Reddy, Medical Officer of 13 Assam Rifles. Speaking on the physiological and psychological impact of drug use, he explained how stimulants, depressants, and hallucinogens severely affect brain function, cause long-term organ damage, and often lead to irreversible consequences, including death.

He cautioned that misinformation, curiosity and peer pressure are some of the biggest contributors to drug use among youth. “Even vaping and energy drinks, which may seem harmless, can be the start of a dangerous path,” he cautioned.

The programme was attended by students, teachers, healthcare professionals, members of the armed forces and other community stakeholders.

The event began with prayer by Vivozonuo Miachieo and was chaired by the school’s Vice Principal, Khriezoseituo Suohu.
