MLA Achumbemo stresses education as key to progress

MLA Achumbemo Kikon and others at the ‘4th Erudite Fest’ of St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama held on March 28.

Kohima, March 28 (MExN): The post-graduate students of St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama organised the ‘4th Erudite Fest’ under the theme ‘Educate to Liberate’ at the college indoor stadium on March 28. 

The inaugural session was graced by Achumbemo Kikon, MLA and Chairman SDPDB, Bhandari Assembly Constituency as the special guest, stated a press release received here. In his speech, Achumbemo reiterated that “it is educate to liberate and not liberate to educate” and thus, for any progress to be visible, education is the key and crucial ingredient. 

He cautioned the students not to trade one’s right to vote for the lust of money because their vote has the right to shape and direct their past, present and the future. “Educated lots need to change the society by choosing the rightful person to hold the power,” he affirmed.

Kikon emphasised that to be truly liberated, one should not over-glorify government jobs, excessively rely on their parents and not to be a prisoner of tribalism. Healso encouraged the students to read more proactively by highlighting his New Year’s resolution to take a book to the washroom instead of his phone. 

Further, Kikon exposed the dark truths of AI and nudged the students to be vigilant by making sure to read more consistently. He concluded stating, “Unless we are educated, we will be a liability and not an asset to our society”.

In the welcome address, Dr Fr Pezhalhoukho George, PG Coordinator (SJC) urged the the students to be “the real headhunters in the pursuit of education.” He mentioned that the PG block constitutes 7.1% of the college with 302 students enrolled in the PG block. 

The second session of 4th Erudite Fest comprised of debate, documentary video, quiz and declamation. Artists such as Joshua Shohe and Young Naga Jamir delivered entertaining performances.
