Wokha, April 1 (MExN): The Department of History, Mount Tiyi College, organised a study tour to Khonoma village on March 28 last.
A total of 31 students participated in the tour, which was led by Associate Professor Dr Libemo Kithan, Head of Department, along with Assistant Professor Dr Bokali Shohe.
Khonoma, widely recognised for its legacy of resistance and indigenous governance systems, occupies a significant place in Naga history.
The village is particularly noted for its resistance against British colonial expansion during the 19th century, especially during the Anglo-Naga War, serving as a centre of organised defence that reflected the unity and strategic acumen of the Naga people.
A key highlight of the tour was the visit to Khonoma’s three historic forts. Located on elevated ridges, these structures enabled villagers to monitor enemy movements and mount effective defensive responses.
Built using stones, earth and wooden barricades, the forts stand as a testament to the military ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Khonoma warriors.
The students also explored the traditional Morung, a communal dormitory that functioned as a hub of social, cultural and educational learning. It played a crucial role in imparting community values, warfare skills and oral traditions to younger generations.
According to the department, the tour provided valuable practical exposure, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and lived historical experience, making it both meaningful and enriching for the students.
