BLF Officials and KVK staffs Kiphire along with garlic farmers of Amahator at Amahator village
Kiphire, April 4 (MExN): NABARD Regional Office, Dimapur, have supported pilot project on ‘Promotion of Indigenous Garlic cultivation for income generation’ at Amahator village.
The project is implemented by Better Life Foundation, based on innovative package of practices, growing indigenous variety garlic in terrace fields with regulated intermittent water flooding. The quality of the garlic is very strong and much superior as per the local community, stated a press release issued by Sethrichem Sangtam, MD, Better Life Foundation.
Altogether 30 beneficiaries were supported in growing 600 bulks each with an investment of Rs 10000 including wages and seeds. After 6 months when they harvest, their income is Rs 30000 from the sale of garlic after keeping seeds for the next year. A winter crop that is sown in late August and early September and is harvested in late March or early April.
Post harvest management training was facilitated by Dr Manjunath S T (SMS Horti), KVK Kiphire, skilling the farmers for optimal crop handling and storage and different value additions.
This initiative reflects NABARD’s vision of “taking Rural India Forward. Better Life Foundation’s an NGO working in remote rural areas, empowering local communities and enhancing agricultural practices through natural farming, the release added.
