Kohima, September 30 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Tuesday expressed “deep concern and outrage” over a recent death threat issued against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi during a televised debate, calling it “unacceptable in a democracy.”
In a statement, the NPCC said the threat, allegedly made by a BJP spokesperson from Kerala, was a “dangerous and deliberate provocation” and should not be dismissed as casual rhetoric.
The NPCC said it stands with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah initiate “immediate and decisive action” against the individual responsible.
“It is a dangerous and deliberate provocation that reflects the disturbing trend of normalising threats and violence against political opponents,” NPCC stated.
Stating that as a nation, we have borne our share of the bitter and devastating consequences of political assassinations, the NPCC said, ‘The tragic loss of leaders such as Indira Gandhi and Shri Rajiv Gandhi remains a painful reminder of why such threats to public leaders should be addressed with utmost seriousness and urgency.’
It asserted that an open death threat against the Leader of the Opposition is “nothing short of an attack on India’s democracy itself.”
The NPCC called upon the Central Government to “bring the offender to justice” and set a strong example, while also urging citizens across the political spectrum to condemn the act.
