Kohima, March 7 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) A Naga student organisation the Nagaland Police to take prompt and decisive action in connection with an ongoing sexual harassment case involving a suspended IAS officer Reny Wilfred.
In a representation addressed to the Director General of Police, the organisation expressed concern over what it described as delays in visible law enforcement action despite multiple allegations having been made by women against the officer.
According to the organisation, several female employees who had worked under the officer during his tenure as Joint Secretary of Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) had accused him alleged sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct.
However, the NSF noted with concern that while a charge sheet has reportedly been filed in the case, there appears to be little progress in translating these legal findings into tangible action.
The organisation stated that the allegations do not appear to be an isolated incident and cautioned that delays in pursuing the case could undermine public confidence in institutional accountability and discourage survivors of workplace harassment from coming forward.
The NSF also recalled it had earlier approached the Government of Nagaland seeking the officer’s suspension from public office in view of the seriousness of the allegations.
While acknowledging that the officer has since been placed under suspension, it expressed concern over the absence of clear progress in disciplinary proceedings and the advancement of the criminal process.
The representation further stated that prolonged delays in pursuing the case may add to the distress faced by the complainants, who had already come forward despite social and emotional challenges.
While noting that the accused has reportedly sought legal remedies in court regarding the charge sheets filed against him, the organisation emphasised that due process should not lead to undue delay in the delivery of justice in cases involving allegations of sexual harassment.
It therefore urged the Nagaland Police to ensure that the case proceeds with urgency and seriousness in accordance with the law, while also cautioning against any attempts to interfere with the course of investigation.
“In the interest of justice, institutional credibility, and the safety and dignity of women in public service, we urge your office to act swiftly and decisively,” the NSF added.
