Chümoukedima, February 27 (MExN): North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima, observed World NGO Day on February 27.
The programme commenced with an opening address by MSW trainee Zuben N Tsanglao, who spoke about the significant role of NGOs in bridging societal gaps through everyday acts of service such as community teaching, cleanliness drives, and humanitarian relief efforts. He said that consistent grassroots engagement remains central to meaningful social transformation.
Dr. Toli H. Kiba, Assistant Professor at NEISSR, delivered a talk on NGOs as key pillars of civil society functioning at the grassroots level. Referring to the 2026 International World NGO Day theme, “Restoring Dignity Through Inclusion,” she stated that NGOs serve as an important bridge between government services and marginalized communities, particularly in remote regions.
Dr. Toli observed that across India — and especially in Nagaland — NGOs play a crucial role in empowering vulnerable groups, delivering essential services, advocating for the rights of marginalized communities, and responding to humanitarian crises. She cited the example of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, noting its continued humanitarian assistance during times of conflict.
While acknowledging the transformative potential of NGOs, she also pointed to challenges faced by many organizations, including financial constraints, restrictions related to Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) funding, irregular project support, sustainability concerns, and instances of inconsistent operations.
Encouraging future social workers to actively support the NGO sector, Dr. Toli urged trainees to contribute through sincere fieldwork, systematic documentation, financial mobilization, active participation, and genuine appreciation of grassroots initiatives.
