Kohima, March 10 (MExN): The National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland unit has strongly condemned recurring incidents of racial discrimination and harassment faced by people from the Northeast in different parts of the country.
In a statement issued on March 10, the party expressed concern over a recent racially motivated attack in Delhi in which two individuals from Manipur and Assam were reportedly assaulted by a group of youths while walking in a park.
Referring to the statement of Conrad K Sangma, national president of the NPP and chief minister of Meghalaya, the Nagaland unit echoed his condemnation of the incident. Sangma said the repeated attacks on people from the Northeast in mainland India were disturbing and that racial bullying must not be accepted as the new normal, calling on authorities to take immediate and stringent action against those responsible.
NPP Nagaland vice president and chief spokesperson K James Vizo said racial discrimination against people from the Northeast remains a serious concern and must be addressed firmly. He appealed to the concerned authorities and law enforcement agencies to take strict and immediate measures to curb such acts and ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens.
The party also emphasised the need to promote greater awareness about the history, culture and contributions of Northeast India across the country. It suggested incorporating more content on the region in school curricula and national awareness programmes to foster better understanding and mutual respect among people.
Reiterating that India’s strength lies in its diversity, the party called on all sections of society to work together to build a nation based on respect, harmony and inclusiveness, and to remove the sense of alienation felt by many people from the Northeast.
