A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the Mokokchung police for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman residing in Sungkomen Ward, Mokokchung.

According to a complaint filed at the Women Police Station, Mokokchung, the victim reported that she became acquainted with the accused through Facebook. Despite her refusal to meet, the accused allegedly visited her residence on the morning of September 30, and forced himself on her.

The victim stated that the incident occurred between 10:30 and 11:00 AM after the accused arrived uninvited. The victim later filed a formal complaint on October 1.

Upon receiving the complaint, the Women Police Station, Mokokchung, registered a case (Mkg WPS C/No-0005/25) under Sections 64 and 74 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for sexual offence. Police confirmed that accused was arrested and is currently in custody.

The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) meanwhile described the incident as “appalling” and said it has “gravely shaken our community,” terming it not only a crime against an individual but “an affront to the entire society.”

The student body demanded that the police and district administration handle the case with “the utmost seriousness and urgency.” It asserted that “mere assurances will not suffice,” and stressed that the accused must be prosecuted under the fullest extent of the law. “Justice must be delivered swiftly. Any negligence or leniency in handling this case will be seen as a failure of the authorities to uphold their responsibility to protect the citizens,” it stated.

The AKM further demanded that safety measures, particularly for women and students, be immediately strengthened and that strict vigilance be maintained to prevent the recurrence of such crimes.

In addition, the organisation appealed to young people to be cautious when using social media. “Online friendships with strangers can be dangerous and meeting random people after befriending them online must be strictly avoided,” it warned, urging parents, guardians, and students to remain vigilant.

The AKM affirmed that it “will not remain silent spectators to injustice and will take every step necessary if the authorities fail to act decisively.” It expressed solidarity with the victim and her family, stating that “such acts of brutality will never be tolerated under any circumstance.”
