Wokha district commemorated the International Day of Older Persons at VDB Hall on October 1, organised by the Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the Senior Citizen Association Wokha under the theme “Older Person Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspiration, Our Well-being, Our Rights.”
EAC, Wokha, Sangmou Khiamniungan, graced the occasion as the special guest. In his address, he underscored the transformative role played by senior citizens, acknowledging their foundational contributions which have eased the lives of younger generations through their sacrifices.
He further noted their efforts in opening opportunities for change and access to modern facilities, and expressed gratitude for their role in bridging developmental gaps. While addressing concerns about drug and alcohol addiction, he stressed the responsibility of senior citizens in fostering positive change for future generations.
Dr Khyopenthung Tsopoe, Vice Principal of Mount Tiyi College, Wokha, shared on the theme, highlighting senior citizens as bearers of wisdom and knowledge. He encouraged their continued contribution towards societal development, drawing inspiration from global personalities who have served as lighthouses of growth, development, and leadership.
On the occasion, district awards were presented to two senior citizens Rev M Wosumo Humtsoe and Anymro Lotha in recognition of their contributions.
Speaking on behalf of the senior citizens, O Orhyumomo Lotha expressed gratitude and recalled the inception and formation of the Senior Citizens Association Wokha, while also outlining its role and objectives.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by N Renchio, while the welcome and introductory remarks were delivered by District Welfare Officer, C James Ezung.
