Laid to rest after post-mortem, probe underway

The body of a stillborn premature baby girl, recovered from the Vekhvürojü River in Wokha district on April 14, was laid to rest on Wednesday following a post-mortem examination and a dignified funeral.
The body was first spotted by a group of frog collectors in the river stretch between Airfield Colony and Humtso village. Sangmou Khiamniungan, Executive Magistrate (EAC), Wokha, reported the incident to Wokha Police Station at around 6:40 pm, following which police personnel retrieved the body the same evening.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on April 15 at the District Hospital, Wokha, in the presence of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members and women police officials, Additional Superintendent of Police, Wokha, Biren Lotha said.
Examination findings indicated that the baby was delivered at seven months’ gestation.
Any suspect or culprit is yet to be arrested. A case has been registered under Unnatural Death (UD) at Wokha Police Station and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway. Authorities said all necessary agencies have been involved in the process.
The infant, named Joanna, was laid to rest at the common graveyard in Wokha. The funeral was conducted in the presence of a magistrate, CWC members and church workers.
