Dimapur, April 15 (MExN): The Street Vendors Association Nagaland (SVAN) was formally launched at an inaugural programme held at Hotel Saramati Conference Hall, Dimapur, on April 15, with over 100 street vendors from across various sectors in attendance.
Tianungla, Councillor, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), and Lanu Akumtoshi Jamir, Convener, Grievances Cell and Credit Committee, Business Association of Nagas (BAN), attended the inaugural as special guests.
Addressing the gathering, Tianungla highlighted the significance of the Street Vendors Act enacted in Nagaland in May 2019, which seeks to protect the rights of urban street vendors while regulating vending activities.
Jamir spoke on strategies to counter extortion and encouraged vendors to address grievances through legal mechanisms. He also urged them to avail government schemes such as the Chief Minister Micro Finance Scheme and the PM SVANidhi Scheme to strengthen and expand their businesses.
Chairing the event, Dr Subonglemba Aier, General Secretary, SVAN, briefed participants on registration procedures at the association office, the process for obtaining municipal permits, and plans to conduct surveys to identify designated vending zones.
Kughato Zhimomi, President, SVAN, also outlined the association’s journey from an informal collective of vendors to its formal establishment.
Meanwhile, both DMC and BAN assured support to the newly formed association and expressed willingness to collaborate in addressing the concerns of street vendors.
