Kohima, April 23 (MExN): Stressing on the role of teachers in sustaining language and identity, Ura Academy President and former Chief Minister Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu on April 23 said that without their efforts, the progress of Tenyidie and the academy itself would not have been possible.
“Without their efforts, the progress of the academy would not have been possible,” he said, while addressing an orientation programme for Tenyidie teachers on “A Comprehensive Course on Tenyidie–IX” at Ura Academy Hall, Kohima.
The programme was organised by the Ura Academy in collaboration with the Directorate of School Education (DoSE), Nagaland, and attended by teachers from both government and private schools.
Dr Liezietsu said the academy, “by God’s grace, has grown over the years and contributed significantly to the development of the Tenyidie language,” which is now taught up to the university level, paving the way for higher education and research.
He stressed that the language remains central to the identity of the Tenyimi community and must be passed down to future generations. Describing teaching as a noble profession, he urged teachers to take pride in their work, especially in teaching Tenyidie, which he termed “priceless.”
He added that beyond earning a livelihood, teachers play a role in preserving culture, traditions and heritage, and serve as role models for younger generations.
During the programme, Dr Keneichanuo Mepfhüo, language assistant at DoSE, delivered the keynote address.
The inaugural session was chaired by Daso Paphino, vice president of Ura Academy and chairman of the Textbook Division, while the invocation prayer was offered by Pheluopfhelie Kesiezie, treasurer of the academy.
Resource persons for the orientation included Dr Metseilhouthie Mor, assistant professor at Pfütsero Government College; Sazonuo Zhünyü, language teacher at GHSS Sechü-Zubza; Kikruneinuo Liezietsu, graduate teacher at GHS Bayavü; and Araile Imchen, academic officer at the Nagaland Board of School Education. Dr Neiphrezonuo Mepfhüo and Diethosilie Chakrünuo served as moderators.
