Phek, March 4 (MExN): The ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, in collaboration with the ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek under the ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun, organised a three-day training programme on “Empowering Rural Livelihood Through Scientific Backyard Poultry Management” for farmers of Khezhakeno village from March 2 to 4.
The programme was conducted under the aegis of ICAR–ATARI, Zone VII, Umiam.
The training programme began with a welcome address and introductory remarks by Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist and Head, who highlighted the importance of poultry-based training programmes and expressed gratitude to ICAR–IVRI, Bareilly, for its continued support in strengthening the poultry sector in Phek district.
In his remarks, Dr M H Khan, Principal Scientist and Head, emphasised the crucial role of poultry farming in ensuring rural livelihood security, improving nutrition and contributing to the economic upliftment of farmers.
The technical sessions conducted over the three days were led by experts from ICAR KVK, Phek, Porba. Dr T Esther Longkumer, CTO (Soil Science), delivered a lecture on poultry waste management and its integration with natural farming systems. Dr Hannah K Asangla, CTO (Agronomy), focused on income generation activities in agriculture and allied sectors.
Dr Harini K R, SMS (Animal Science), highlighted entrepreneurship opportunities in the poultry sector and covered various aspects of scientific poultry management, including feeding and housing management practices for chicks and layers, hatchery management, disease control, value addition and marketing of poultry products.
Manjunath K S, SMS (Horticulture), delivered a lecture on protected cultivation of horticultural crops and underscored its importance in integrated farming systems.
As part of the training programme, a field visit to a poultry farm was organised, during which a practical demonstration on poultry vaccination was conducted for the participants. Inputs including chicks, poultry feed, drinkers and feeders were also distributed to the participating farmers.
The training concluded with a farmer–scientist interaction, providing a platform for farmers to share field-level problems and experiences related to poultry farming. Certificates of participation were distributed to all the trainees in recognition of their active involvement throughout the three-day programme.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Harini K R, who acknowledged the valuable support of ICAR–IVRI, Bareilly, in the successful conduct of the training programme and appreciated the efforts of all resource persons, organisers and participating farmers.
