The second day of the indigenous games organised as part of the Tokhu Emong programme was held at the Public Ground, Wokha, on November 5, with Deputy Commissioner Wokha, K Mhathung Tsanglao, attending as the special guest.

The programme was chaired by Eloe Hoho President, Thungbeni Ngullie, and featured a folksong presentation by Perennial School, Wokha.

In his address, Tsanglao underscored the importance of developing a broader outlook towards life and society, observing that “an empty mind is the workshop of the devil.” He outlined three types of mindsets prevalent among people: those focused solely on personal growth, those whose concerns remain limited to their village, range or immediate surroundings, and those who think beyond these boundaries for the larger welfare of society.

He encouraged people to adopt the third mindset, stating that collective progress requires individuals to look beyond personal and local interests and work towards the overall development of society. He added that such an approach was essential for building a better future for the coming generations.

Tsanglao also highlighted the need to move beyond the conventional perception that success is defined by securing a government job. He encouraged people to explore opportunities outside government and salaried employment, emphasising the importance of initiative and entrepreneurship.

Stressing the dignity of labour, he maintained that no form of work should be considered embarrassing and called on people to remain energetic, resourceful and willing to explore different avenues of livelihood.

Later, Tsanglao officially declared the indigenous games competition open. The competitions were conducted by Team Metamorphosis.

In the high jump event, Aben Ezung emerged champion, while Asemo Murry secured the runners-up position. In the traditional wooden top spinning competition, Orenlow Humtsoe and Chumben Humtsoe secured first and second places, respectively.

In the Lotha Naga-style traditional winnowing competition, Zanbeni Kithan (14) claimed the title, while Rabemo Ngullie and Asemo Murry emerged winners in the Naga karting event.

The finals of the tug-of-war competition are scheduled for November 7, the concluding day of the festival.

Meanwhile, the cultural day programme on November 6 will be graced by Wonchio Odyuo, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, as the special guest. The programme will feature folk song and folk dance competitions, showcasing the cultural richness of the Lotha community.
