WAYO reaffirms stance on bail for accused in Kohima incident

Kohima, March 30 (MExN): The Western Angami Youth Organisation (WAYO) has reiterated its demand that no bail should be granted to the accused involved in the alleged attack and death of Kezhalie Lawrence Miasalhou, Political Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima.

In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, through the Sub-Divisional Officer (Sechü-Zubza), WAYO reaffirmed its memorandum dated May 20, 2024, particularly stressing that “no bail should be given to them under any circumstances.”

However, WAYO raised serious concerns over reports that one of the accused has already been granted bail, while the other has applied for the same.  The organisation underscored that the case remains in court and should be considered with utmost seriousness. It cited CCTV footage of the incident, which has been widely circulated, which “clearly” showed the attack in broad daylight in the heart of Kohima.

Highlighting the sensitivity of the case, WAYO pointed out that less than a year has passed since the incident and emotions “still high.” It also questioned why only two out of 39 listed witnesses had been examined as per courts record.

Accordingly, it reiterated that freeing the accused at this juncture could lead to “serious law and order” situation and urged authorities to take proactive steps to maintain public peace in light of the “volatile undercurrent.”
