A consultative meeting-cum-capacity building workshop on floriculture and apiculture was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall in Wokha on Wednesday, aimed at strengthening livelihood opportunities through scientific farming practices.

The programme was organised in collaboration with the district administration and the CSIR–North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat.

The workshop focused on equipping farmers with practical knowledge and modern techniques to enhance productivity. Experts from NEIST introduced advanced beekeeping practices, highlighting that improved honeybee boxes developed by the institute can yield up to eight harvests annually, compared to only two from conventional boxes commonly used in the district.

To ensure wider adoption, farmers were trained to fabricate low-cost bee boxes using locally available materials. Improved bee boxes and essential equipment were also distributed to participants.

In addition to classroom sessions, NEIST officials conducted field visits and provided hands-on training on scientific flower harvesting, pest management and seed preservation techniques to support sustainable cultivation cycles.

Deputy Commissioner of Wokha Vineet Kumar, addressing the programme, emphasised the importance of adopting improved agricultural practices. He urged farmers to actively engage with NEIST, noting that Wokha is currently the only district in Nagaland collaborating with the institute.

Expressing optimism, he said consistent coordination could help position Wokha as a model district in the sector. He also advised chamomile cultivators to maximise land use by avoiding fallow periods and diversifying crops under the initiative.

Highlighting the need for efficient resource utilisation, Kumar underscored that sustained engagement with technical agencies would play a crucial role in strengthening the district’s agricultural economy.

The programme concluded with the distribution of bee boxes and related materials to farmers.
