Kohima, April 13 (MExN): A five-day workshop on ‘Digital Research Tools in Social Science and Humanities’ commenced at Kohima College on April 13, organised by the Research Development Cell (RDC) of the college.

Funded by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the workshop brings together faculty, scholars and students to engage with key aspects of contemporary research, including methodology, academic writing, data analysis and the ethical use of digital tools, stated a press release.

The inaugural session was chaired by Dr Konei Nakhro. Principal Dr Vitsosie Vupru declared the programme open and urged participants to develop rigorous and meaningful research practices.
Academic sessions for the day were conducted by Khrieneikuo Zumu, who delivered two presentations aimed at strengthening participants' conceptual clarity.

In the first session on Introduction to Research Methodology and Types of Research, Zumu described research as a systematic and scientific process of understanding social reality. He drew a distinction between research methodology and methods, and explained various classifications of research based on purpose, objectives, approach and time dimension, noting that social science research often combines multiple approaches to produce reliable knowledge.

The second session focused on Research Approaches and Design, with Zumu outlining quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches and linking them to philosophical orientations such as positivism and interpretivism. He described research design as a strategic blueprint guiding the entire research process, and shared practical insights on framing research problems, formulating hypotheses and ensuring methodological coherence. Both sessions concluded with question-and-answer exchanges between students and faculty.

Over the course of the workshop, participants will cover topics including literature review, referencing and plagiarism, research proposal writing and fieldwork techniques. Hands-on training will be provided in statistical tools such as SPSS, document preparation using LaTeX, and reference management software including Zotero and Mendeley.

The final day will feature a session on the ethical adoption of artificial intelligence in research, followed by training in academic writing and publication. The workshop will conclude with a valedictory programme comprising a rapporteur's report, certificate distribution and a vote of thanks.
