'Build your own future,' SJU students told

Chümoukedima, July 8 (MExN): Stressing that government employment alone cannot meet the aspirations of the state's growing youth population, Nagaland State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Tongpang L Jamir urged students to embrace entrepreneurship, innovation and technology as they prepare for their future.

Addressing the Students' Induction Programme 2026 at St. Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima, Jamir said the number of government jobs available was limited in comparison to the large pool of jobseekers. He encouraged students to plan their careers realistically, pursue their dreams with determination and look beyond conventional employment opportunities.

Calling on students to embrace technology and strive for excellence, he expressed confidence in the youth of Nagaland and urged them to play an active role in building a "Viksit Bharat."

The two-day induction programme, held on July 8 and 9, formally welcomed the university's newly admitted undergraduate students and introduced them to the institution's academic framework, campus life and student support systems.

Registrar Dr. A Robert Xavier, in his welcome address, congratulated the incoming students and highlighted the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme under the new UGC guidelines. He also underscored the importance of education in nation-building and stressed the value of vocational learning and internships in enhancing employability.

Sharing her journey as a first-generation entrepreneur, alumna Sentinaro Pongen, Crown Director of Vestige Marketing Pvt. Ltd., encouraged students to remain grounded in their values and place God first in all that they do.

The inaugural session also featured the presidential address by Vice-Chancellor Dr. D Gnanadurai. A welcome song by the Department of Economics and a university presentation by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication formed part of the programme, which concluded with the university anthem led by the Music Club.

During the academic orientation session, Dr. Achanger, Head of the Department of Political Science, introduced students to the university's student-centred and employability-focused academic model. He explained the implementation of the National Education Policy since 2022, the Academic Bank of Credits, the student ID system, and the vocational and community engagement courses offered by the university.

Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Charles Mhonthung Ezung briefed students on the university's rules and regulations, emphasising the importance of self-discipline, while Controller of Examinations Dr. S Thiyagarajan explained the examination system and academic assessment process.

The induction programme concluded with a benediction by Khamla P Phom, marking the close of the orientation programme designed to familiarise new students with academic expectations and campus life at St. Joseph University.
