‘Changing environmental factors cause of increasing vector borne disease outbreaks’

Dimapur, June 8 (MExN): National Health Mission, Mission Director, Dr Akuo Sorhie has said that changing environmental factors has impacted the increase of vector borne disease outbreaks worldwide. 

The director was speaking during World Environment Day observed in the Directorate of Health & family Welfare, Nagaland at IDSP Conference Hall. 

A press release from the department stated that Sorhie relatively, stable geographical distribution of vector borne diseases in the past is now changing, owing to a range of factors including climate change, deforestation, intensive farming and change in land use, irrigation, population movement and rapid unplanned urbanization are but a few leading factors in increasing the intensity and spread of vector borne diseases. 

The official further stated that the global climate change is a key factor in occurrence of Vector Borne Disease outbreaks as it makes the conditions favorable to the breeding of mosquito vectors. 

Hence, Intersectoral meeting and Co-ordination from allied Departments with the Department of H&FW, such as the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme is needed in Source Reduction and Controlling the larval habitats of mosquitoes in and around the vicinity of human habitations.

To address these challenges, Dr Akuo Sorhie, advocated to foster collaboration at all levels and said that governments must enact and enforce policies that protect and restore land, while providing the necessary resources and support to local communities. 

International organizations and donors, she underscored that we should prioritize funding for land restoration, desertification prevention, and drought resilience initiatives, she also said and added that Policy makers need to craft and enforce laws that protect our environment, promote sustainable practices, and incentivize green technologies. 

Citing other agencies Sorhie suggested that businesses should embrace eco-friendly practices, innovate towards sustainability, and reduce their carbon footprints and as individuals, we can make conscious choices to reduce waste, conserve water, and minimize our energy use. 

Simple actions like planting a tree, reducing plastic use, or supporting local conservation efforts can collectively contribute to significant ecological restoration, the director said. 

Sensitization of community for elimination of breeding sites through environmental management, source reduction, cleanliness drive and community participation.

She also called to reflect and rejuvenate our collective commitments to protecting and preserving our planet and focus on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan 'Our land, our future.'
