No Water, No Toilets, No Science Teacher

Seyochung Village Students' Union flags basic facility gaps at govt school

DIMAPUR, APRIL 10 (MExN): The Seyochung Village Students’ Union (SVSU) on April 10 said that the Government High School, Seyochung Village, lacks essential infrastructure including toilets, water supply, and staff quarters, after a site visit conducted as part of its regular school monitoring program.

During the visit, SVSU members interacted with both teaching and non-teaching staff who reported several issues hampering the functioning of the school. “The school currently has no toilet or urinal facilities for the students and staff,” the union said in a statement. “There is also no water supply in the school, which makes daily functioning very difficult.”

The union noted that the absence of staff quarters remains a “major problem for teachers who come from outside the village.”
SVSU President Longtili C. Sangtam said the union would take up the matter with relevant authorities. “The union is committed to improving the education environment in the village,” he stated, assuring the school authority of support.

The union expressed appreciation for the recent appointment of an Assistant Headmaster at the school. “This has brought some improvement to the administration of the school,” Sangtam said, thanking the District Education Officer (DEO) Kiphire and the Department of School Education.

However, the union also made a fresh appeal to the department, urging an immediate posting of a Science teacher. “The subject is currently being left out due to the lack of a qualified teacher,” the union said.

Sangtam noted that the SVSU has been making monthly visits to the school “to work together with the school staff and management for better functioning and to provide support wherever possible.”

Despite the challenges, the union praised one development at the school — the adoption of solar power. “The school is fully running on solar energy, which is a good example of using renewable energy,” Sangtam said. “This is an encouraging step and hopes more such green initiatives will be taken in the future.”
